Galloping the Globe – Mexico!
Our study of North Amercia began with Mexico! However, we won’t be following up with studies of Canada and the USA until Spring time when we can better interact with local wildlife and plant life, etc. Here are some snapshots and captions from our unit! Mexican Food! Might I suggest some amazingly YUMMY Tacos for lunch? So easy to make, and a favorite for our kids! Mexican Cookie Rings were delicious and so easy. They are almost the same as sugar cookies, but with a finger print hold in the middle and sprinkles on top before baking. We loved them. Here is the recipe. Mexican Music and Dance We enjoyed watching some…
Galloping the Globe – Great Britain
Great Britain! First of all, my experience with Great Britain is very limited, so I had to research quite a bit to share enough knowledge with the children. Because Great Britain includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – there was a lot to cover. We chose to only focus on a few topics, otherwise, we could have looked at Great Britain for weeks on end. Some of our activities included: I decided to do a character/time period study using a living book about Florence Nightingale. Usborne’s $7.95 biography is fantastic for children age 5-10 (ish). What a life Miss Nightingale lived and what an inspiration for using your…
Galloping the Globe… France!
We had so much fun studying France! I’ve always been in love with Europe, and the prospect of studying this beautiful country excited me as much as the kids. We studied the language, climate, geography, culture, music, and art of France. This included a study of Claude Monet (though there are so many famous French artists we could have chosen). We also took a look at french cuisine and cooking as an “art”. We also learned some french language, listened to traditional french music, baked goodies, and learned about the famous cave paintings in Lascaux. What a breath-taking country full of live and culture! If you ask our children where…
Africa – East and South
We kick started our homeschool year in August. We started with a study of East Africa (mostly Kenya), and South Africa. We LOVE studying about Africa. What I did find, however, is there is an overwhelming amount of literature and resources about this beautiful continent. What struck me most profoundly is the vast diversity in people groups, biomes and climate, community, and religion. Africa is not just the Serengeti, friends! I am passionate about presenting our children with a true, non-biased study of Africa, which certainly includes some of the common African cultures, but later this year we will also study Morocco, Egypt, Central Africa, and Tanzania. We also mixed…
