    3 Simple Ways to Take Control of the Screens in your Home

      Here’s a peak at my post for Hip Homeschool Moms this month —   Most families have multiple screens in their home – between the TV, computers, iPads, iPods, cell phones, hand-held video games… for many, it can feel like the screens are taking over.  Do not get discouraged though – there is hope and there are very practical ways you can take control.   As a family, we decided to toss our TV almost a decade ago.  It was one of the best decisions we ever made in the quest to tame the screens.  This is always my first recommendation to families struggling with unplugging – get rid of the TV!…

    Staying Present {a whisper about unplugging to plug in to what matters}

      Have you lived the struggle of staying present in your home?    I sure have.   I know how so many Moms feel.  I’ve lived those days when the exhaustion sets in, selfishness wins, and distractions take over.  Especially the distractions. And don’t we live in a world full of time-wasting distractions?   Part of the reason I long so deeply to be more unplugged is so I can ‘plug in’ to what matters.      Because our culture urges us to live in fast-forward, blasting through the days.  The laundry, the sports team, the dinner, the play date, the appointments, the cleaning, the this, the that, the phone, the email,…

    Living Hands Free {thoughts on striving to live unplugged and a review of Hands Free Life}

      It’s been nearly a decade since we tossed our TV for good.  Wow, that makes me feel old.  I still remember the slow progression of that honking, massive TV from center stage in the living room to the basement to the basement closet to being given away.  We’ve never looked back.  Hands-down the best decision we’ve every made. Simply tossing the TV started us on a journey we never set out for ourselves.  A journey that took this TV-loving (hey I was going to make a big-wig career as a TV producer and had the diploma to prove it) to a striving-to-be ‘unplugged‘, TV-free Mama.  And, you know, TV free…

    The REAL World.

    I’ve lived through the condescension.  I’ve had the narrowed glares and raised eyebrows fired my way more times than I could ever count.  And just when I thought I couldn’t bear being asked the same question any more, it’s shot at me again: “So, honestly, how are you preparing your kids for the REAL world?” People ask this when they find out we educate at home.  People ask this when they find out we censor what our children read and watch.  People ask this when they find out we do not have TV or video games.  People ask this when they hear we teach the gospel in our home.  People ask…
